Au Pair Year FAQ

Because there’s always questions when people discover I live in Paris, I thought a little FAQ about my job/living situation might clear up some misunderstandings. For how I afford to travel, click here.

What exactly are you doing in France?

I’m an “au pair.” “Au pair” is a type of nanny – although our differentiation is in the type of contract versus the type of qualification . Although I’m technically on a student visa with a work allowance.

Do you live alone?

No, I live with my employers. Similar to a foreign exchange student, but I’m hired household help.

What exactly are you responsible for?

Taking care of the children, putting away their laundry, homework help, keeping the house generally tidy, and occasional cooking. I have a contract with it all specified. This is just my situation, there are other variations among the au pairs and their families.

What do you receive in return?

I have my own bedroom and I eat with the family (food & board). My host family also pays for my public transport pass (non obligatory) as well as my French SIM card. Additionally, I do receive some pocket money each month which I use to discover this amazing city!

Do you speak English or French with the children?

Both! French 95% of the time, although I am teaching them more phrases and Friday is our “English day.”

How long will you be there?

For at least a year! My visa (the document that allows me to live and work in France for more than 90 days) can be extended – but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. 😉

How did you find this opportunity of a lifetime?

I have a friend who suggested I look into it. I used the free website https://www.aupairworld.com/en I would be happy to answer any further questions regarding this subject!

Are you able to attend church service in Paris?

Actually, yes! The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has several congregations in the Paris metropolitan area.

Are you continuing your studies while overseas?

That was the plan. But at the beginning of October, I withdrew from my online courses at Brigham Young University- Idaho and deferred the rest of the semester. On the contrary, part of my visa requires I attend a French course on language and culture during the week (which happens to be located right next to Notre Dame). So I still have 10 hours per week of studies.

When are you going back to school (in the US)?

Next autumn is the current plan. But that’s always subject to change, right?

When did you leave for Europe?

The first week of August, 2015. Although my first time in Europe (when I taught English in Russia) was September of 2014 until December of 2014.

Can we be best friends so I can visit you?

Sorry, I’m not accepting applications for the BFF position. However, do feel free to meet up! I could spend the day with you or maybe play tour guide depending on my schedule.

How do you afford to travel?

Living in Paris was just one of the ways I afford to travel – check out my other tricks to save money here.
