Berlin: Beyond Utah Edition

Berlin | Beyond Utah
Brandenburg Tor

Hey friends!
I wanted to branch out and cover one of my “for fun” trips. At the end of February, I ventured to the German capital for a second go at the city (I briefly visited for a day back in 2016). This time around, I stayed for 4 days and set out to explore different parts of the city. I was hosted graciously by my friend Marco. He worked during the day, so I would explore on my own until the evening, when he would show me Berlin through his eyes.

I flew to Berlin via Amsterdam. The KLM crews both ways were amazing and treated me so well! They upgraded me and we chatted after they had finished their service. I didn’t get a photo with the one of the crews, but here are my new friends from my flight to Berlin. I’m so happy to call them my colleagues and fellow SkyTeam parters!

One of the top things on my list was the House of Small Wonder. This Instagram icon is snuggled in West Berlin, about halfway between Berlin Hauptbahnhof and Alexanderplatz. I had the eggs and potato gratin with a Mediterranean salad. Not only do they have all-day lunch options, but also all-day brunch options! #BeStillMyHeart It doesn’t matter what time you come, as long as you make the House of Small Wonder a part of your next trip to Berlin!

I was able to visit another friend of mine, Ivy, who is now living in Berlin. We ate lunch at a cute, little cafe called Coffee Room Berlin. Between all the cafes and solo explorations, I worked on my blog and enjoyed the rich coffee culture of Berlin. But perhaps my favorite meal was the famous Berlin döner! Honestly, if I could recreate one meal for each of you to try, it would be the döner. According to the internet (aka Google), a döner generally contains thinly sliced rotisserie meat with mixed salad (lettuce, tomato, cabbage, cucumber, and onion) and any combination of sauces.

As for navigating the public transport, I used an app called “BVG tickets.” I could purchase an all day ticket for zones AB (central Berlin) for 7€ (approximately $8 USD). It worked perfectly and I was able to zip around the city and not worry about losing my ticket!

For those looking for my personal “must see” list of Berlin, I’d suggest the following:
– Brandenburg Tor
– The Holocaust Memorial
– Tiergarten
– Checkpoint Charlie
– Berliner Dom
– House of Small Wonder
– Eat a döner (available anywhere)
– Bar Zum schmutzigen Hobby (for drag shows on Wednesday evenings)
– Berlin TV Tower (I haven’t had the chance yet to go inside)
– Reichstag Building (I haven’t had the chance yet to go inside)
– Anything vetted by Trip Advisor (my go-to for ideas)

  1. Loved this one Paul! And I love Berlin 😍 can’t wait to check out a few of these places/tips when I’m back there later this year. Not gonna lie, those döners are sooo good. I didn’t have one in Berlin but in Dresden it was amazing – I even had a vegan one. It would’ve been in my top 5 meals in Europe for sure – so yum! Next time you’re in Berlin check out the Third Reich walking tour – a long day but packed with info and very worthwhile ☺️
